Moving Elements

The roof is designed to open in a rotating spiral fashion, located on the roof of the library to allow for natural ventilation, daylighting and to bring the outside in. Each segment can be opened one at a time to control the lighting.

This moving element is purely for aesthetic effect, as the beams are illuminated for effect at night, and move to allow for change of form and incite interest.

- This design consists of hybrid structural elements in composite panels, juxtaposing shape and form to create a sense of movement and aesthetic effect and going beyond a structured set of geometric principles.

EXP 3 WEEK 5

Studio Critique

Design Development
I decided to follow the simplicity of connective rectangles, juxtaposing with a curve here and there. The first two floors are rectilinear, however the third floor moves into more of an interesting shape.

I have arranged the plan to fit all necessary spaces, accommodating for 100 people, perhaps 20 staff members and 80 students, not all at the same time, as this building is quite small. It is a building that invites interaction in order to stimulate learning, innovation and development.

Inspiration
Rectilinear, textured, illuminated buildings designed with the principle of the simple prism.
- Regional building, Norway
-NorbLB Headquarters, Germany
- Japanese apartment
- Poland
- Home off a rock cliff
- Cross Towers, Korea

EXP 3 WEEK 4

Textures

Moving Element Development

For the first moving element I want to create a roof that opens and lets natural lighting in. Spending hours in studios, lectures and working rarely allows students access to fresh air. I think it would be effective to create a roof that opens up to allow natural lighting and natural ventilation and perhaps the sense of being outside while being inside.

I thought of the idea of a shell, that opens in a rotating fashion. The shell idea can be logically seen in Fibonacci's Golden Rectangle which explores the idea of the spiral forming mathematically in a set of rectangles.

Then I thought of Davinci's flying machine, as it rotates and lifts off, could be a similar technique in this case.

So far, Ive just built a cylinder and segmented it and raised them to create this spiral/shell effect.

Opening Wall/Balcony
For the second element, I have the idea of opening a wall into a balcony, using suspension technique. This could potentially be used for studio space, cafe or meeting space.
Moving room/elevator
Another idea, to create a room or an elevator that creatively transports or relocates the space.
